•Total-evidence phylogeny largely resolved corixid phylogenetic relationships.•Corixoidea began to diversify in the Middle Triassic (approximately 245 Ma).•Reconstruction of ancestral ranges suggest a Gondwanan origin for Corixoidea.•The breakup of Pangea promoted diversification of the Holarctic corixid lineage.
