•Nucleosides and nucleoside analogues participate in a wide range of biological processes.•Nucleosides and nucleoside analogues can coordinate Pt(II) ions and form bioactive Pt(II) complexes.•Nucleoside-based Pt(II) complexes can disrupt the DNA double helix better than cisplatin.
