Impaired cardiac mechanical synchrony revealed with increased myocardial work in women with advanced age

•Myocardial mechanical dyssynchrony is an independent mortality risk factor compromising efficient cardiac contraction.•Older age and female sex impair mechanical synchrony, before any sign of dysfunction is present in healthy individuals.•The present findings are associated with the age- and female-related shift towards cardiac concentric hypertrophy.
