•The traditional and modern applications of Polygonatum in diabetes were systematically summarized.•The safety and effectiveness of polysaccharides, flavonoids and saponins from Polygonatum genus were assessed.•New pathways for the prevention and treatment of diabetes using Polygonatum genus were proposed.
