Morbidity, mortality,... and innovation: Turning complications into patents

We would like to share our method for introducing innovation into pediatric surgeons’ routines. We believe it is vital to involve clinicians in innovation processes to grow the innovative mindset, and we have found the saying “necessity is the mother of invention” to be true as many innovations come on the heels of problems. In our quest to expand the culture of innovation, we went where the worst surgical problems are discussed – the weekly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conference – transforming an at times intimidating conference into a more exciting discussion. We call our new format “Morbidity, Mortality, and Innovation” (MM&I), and through it we aim to simultaneously encourage a culture of innovation and produce innovative solutions in an abbreviated timeframe.
