•Malaria in late gestation induced placental upregulation of CCR5.•CCR5 deficiency prevented poor pregnancy outcomes caused by malaria.•CCR5-/- placentas had higher area for feto-maternal exchange and reduced TNF levels.•CCR5 deficiency led to smaller NAG activity in the placenta during infection.
