Abstract
•Cropland-grassland conversions (CGCs) temporally presented the “slow-slow-rapid” changes in 1990–2020.•CGCs were spatially centred in the eastern semipastoral area and impacted food security and ecological shelters.•Multiple drivers of CGCs interacted differently in direction and extent, showing marked spatial heterogeneity.•CGCs should be coordinated with regional natural change, socioeconomic development and sustainable goals.
