Performance Evaluation of Nano-RTD VCO Devices for On-Body THz Nano-Communication Applications

Abstract
The constant miniaturization of devices and the insatiable demand for higher bandwidth are driving the development of ultra-compact THz systems. This work proposes a nano-RTD VCO operating at the THz region for on-body nano-communication systems. A semi-analytical tool for evaluating the performance of a transmitter based on the nano-RTD VCO considering different carrier-less modulations is developed. Results show that the device can operate in the H-band (220-325 GHz) while having ultra-low power consumption down to 160 nW at 0.11 Tb/s for reaches up to 25 mm. The device may enable a plethora of applications, including sensing, monitoring, and medical diagnosis.
