THz Imaging System with a Single Resonant Tunneling Diode Transceiver in 300-GHz Band

To reduce the cost of terahertz (THz) imaging systems, we propose an active THz imaging system in which both transmitting and receiving are performed using a single resonant tunneling diode (RTD) transceiver. The self-mixing phenomenon of the RTD was used for 2D imaging with a spatial resolution of similar to 0.8 mm. To increase imaging speed, fast 2D imaging was demonstrated using the beam scanning. The data acquisition time was shortened from 188 to 6 seconds for the imaging area of 60 x 90 mm(2). Phase-averaged imaging by controlling the bias voltage of the RTD was proposed to reduce imaging artifacts caused by the interference effect.
