Mixed method assessment of built environment and policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic by United States municipalities focusing on walking and bicycling actions

•Among 314 US municipalities, we identified examples of actions that might impact bicycling or walking during the COVID-19 pandemic.•More of the identified actions facilitated walking and bicycling.•Fewer of the identified actions restricted walking and bicycling.•Examples of actions included changes to access to facilities; streets and public spaces; signals; and micromobility share.
