•NiCo-CNC@C nanoarchitectures are successfully prepared.•NiCo-CNC@C electrode is highly advantageous for supercapacitors.•NiCo-CNC@C electrode displays a specific capacity of 194.8 mAh/g at 1 A/g.•HSCs cell demonstrates specific energy of 72.6 Wh kg−1 at specific power of 1780 W kg−1.
