•Biomass pyrolysis gas can reduce hematite to magnetite.•The phase transformation process of iron is FeOOH → Fe2O3 → Fe3O4 → FeO.•Reduction and dehydration result in pore formation in the mineral.•The pyrolysis gas can react again during suspension roasting.
