•Online survey data was collected from US adults (N = 2,022).•COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy odds greater for younger, women, & Black respondents.•COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy odds greater among Independent and Republican affiliation.•COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy odds increased with experiences of racial discrimination.•Social processes in the Increasing Vaccination Model should include racism.
