Abstract
•The most comprehensive phylogeny to date of the endangered genus Encephalartos is presented.•Resolution is improved on from previous studies by utilizing additional nuclear and plastid genes.•Five biogeographical patterns of Encephalartos have been observed through Africa.•The results here can provide a foundation for future work on Encephalartos.
