摘要

•The phosphorus-deficiency tolerance in apple plants was negatively regulated by MdWRKY39.•MdWRKY39 repressed the expression of MdPHT1;7 by binding to the TGAC sequences of W-box elements.•MdWRKY39 reduced root hair density in a phosphorus-dependent manner, further limiting phosphorus acquisition.
