•Mapping distributions of dominant tree species using SDM and RS in Hyrcanian forest.•Improve SDMs by adding useful RS variables in mountainous forests.•topographic variables, Sentinel-2 bands, and vegetation and soil indices, gave the best fit for the four tree species.•result of our DSDMs supports conservation management of forest biodiversity in this region.
