The Smart Grids Innovation Accelerator – SGIA: an international open platform to boost smart grids innovation through knowledge sharing

In the frame of the global initiative Mission Innovation, Italy has proposed and developed the Smart Grids Innovation Accelerator (SGIA) platform, aimed to foster open knowledge sharing, thus catalysing public and private sectors joint efforts towards the deployment of innovative Smart Grids technologies worldwide. The SGIA covers not only technical but also policy and regulatory aspects by gathering key documents, information, data, best practices and project results from several relevant stakeholders with the specific aim to be replicated and adopted broadly. Exploiting a semantic engine, advanced AI algorithms and machine learning models, the SGIA automatically gathers all essential information from the documents within its database and provides enriched, easily searchable and browsable documents. Moreover, interlinked entities and relationship from documents are used to build the SGIA knowledge graph, which fosters an innovative way of exploring information based also on natural language queries. The SGIA platform is open to users from all over the world and now it is exploited and further developed in the framework of the Green Powered Future Mission, launched under the Mission Innovation second phase (MI2.0) and co-led by China, Italy and UK. In this paper the SGIA main functionalities will be presented and discussed together the recent developments available for users, such as automatic entity annotations on documents, access to definitions added by other users or through connections towards external databases, AI document summarizations, speech to text of multimedia contents and workspaces to support collaboration of users.
