Winding Geometry Impact on High Power Medium Frequency Transformer Design

DC transformers make an essential building block in empowering future medium voltage direct current power distribution grids. To reach high efficiencies, the design of medium frequency transformers, one of the key elements of DC transformers, needs to be carried out, while fulfilling all technical requirements. The paper discusses the influence of the winding arrangement on the overall performance of a high power medium frequency transformer design. The particular influence is studied on a combination of nanocrystalline core material in a core-type transformer structure with various dispositions of hollow copper conductors as windings. The 2-vessel medium frequency transformer option proved to be the most efficient out of the three suggested ones and a prototype is made for the purpose of design verification.
