Abstract
Modern homes are being crowded with electrical equipment, electronic entertainment devices and various home appliances. Consequently, power consumption and home electric bill has become a big burden on consumers. Accordingly, power rationalization through the use of smart devices can keep the consumer constantly aware and informed about the power consumption around the clock. Additionally, these devices can automate the power usage of home devices, thus converting modern homes to smart modern homes. Taking advantage of the evolving Internet of Things (IoT) and benefiting from the computational capabilities of the Amazon Web Services (AWS), we are proposing an open-source, low cost hardware and software solution that reduces power consumption, man power and maintains high level of security and scalability. The system was successfully tested at the Faculty of Information Technology labs at the University of Petra, Jordan. The system proved to work flawlessly and effectively.
