•Novice DPTs are at high risk for burnout, work-related stress, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.•Training novice DPTs in delivering ACTinterventions improved psychological flexibility and professional quality of life.•DPTs demonstrated decreased compassion fatigue, traumatic stress, burnout and improved quality of life after the training.•The training was acceptable, feasible, and considered an essential skill to manage pain..•ACT is a helpful addition to psychologically informed physical therapy practice.
