Phytocompounds for mosquito larvicidal activity and their modes of action: A review

•We provides a critical analysis of plant chemicals with mosquito larvicidal efficacy and their mode of action.•The compounds from plants are expected to be efficient, and safe for nontarget beneficial organisms in the environment.•Mosquito control management mostly focuses on larval and adult stages.•Metabolites from plants affect insect behaviors, inhibit respiration, reduce fecundity and disrupt cuticle formation.•Insecticides are classified into neurotoxins, growth regulators, and behavior modifiers.
