Medical mistrust, discrimination, and COVID-19 vaccine behaviors among a national sample U.S. adults

•Maximizing COVID-19 vaccine uptake will likely require efforts to improve patient/provider relationships and enhance the trustworthiness of healthcare institutions.•Research is needed to understand the root causes of medical mistrust, whether the source of mistrust varies across populations, and to generate evidence-based interventions to address it.•Addressing the underlying determinants of medical mistrust is crucial to maximizing vaccine uptake.
