•Significant variations are found between consents for laparoscopic cholecystectomy obtained by residents and those obtained by attending physicians.•Residents are more likely to include more complications, including possible bile duct injury, injury to nearby structures, reoperation, and bile leak.•Variation was found among resident year with mid-level residents (PGY 3-4) more likely to include possible intraoperative cholangiogram and reoperation but juniors (PGY 1-2) were more likely to include injury to nearby structures.
