Abstract
Background The creation of an intestinal ostomy may be associated with various complications. Preoperative stoma site marking can be a way to reduce stoma-related complications. Aim of the paper This article deals with different aspects of stoma marking in Germany. Material and methods The article is based on a literature review and interviews with ostomy patients and wound, ostomy and continence nurses. Results Preoperative marking is recommended in some but not all clinical guidelines in Germany. Between 22% and 64% of ostomy patients received preoperative site marking in Germany, although reliable studies are lacking. Preoperative marking can reduce stoma-related complications. From the perspective of patients and nurses, preoperative stoma site marking has great advantages with respect to finding a suitable position that allows optimal ostomy care and reduces the risk of complications. Discussion The proportion of ostomy patients receiving preoperative site marking in Germany should be increased.
