Preparation and applications of metal–organic frameworks composed of sulfonic acid

•Metal–organic frameworks bearing free sulfonic acids (MOF-SAs) are thoroughly reviewed.•Preparation of MOF-SAs via direct synthesis and post-synthetic modification is described.•Applications of MOF-SAs in adsorption, catalysis, and proton conductivity are discussed.•The prospects on MOF-SAs are presented for future research in relevant fields.
