A Power Oscillation Damping Method for Virtual Synchronous Generators Based on Frequency Feedforward in Voltage Reference

The famous virtual synchronous generator technique greatly improves the inertia responses of system with high penetration ratio of renewable energy sources. However, the power oscillation phenomena resulting from the swing equation indicates the possibility to overload the virtual synchronous generators-controlled inverters. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a power oscillation damping method, where the frequency dynamic is feedforward as a compensating signal into the voltage reference. This method is proved to be equivalent to the traditional velocity feedback method used in servo systems for improving the system damping characteristics. The proposed method can not only suppress the power oscillation but have no influence the steady-state operating point of virtual synchronous generators control. The effectiveness of the proposed method is preliminarily verified by simulation and hardware experiments.
