•Silicate adsorbed onto nZVI@D201 was used to assess SMX removal.•Si pre-equilibration enhanced the degradation removal of SMX.•Si-SMX simultaneous addition facilitated the adsorption removal of SMX.•Silicate adsorbed onto nZVI@D201 decreased the crystallinity of minerals.•Silicate formed Fe-O-Si complex and hindered the transformation of ZVI.
