Development of an inline bidirectional micro crossflow turbine for hydropower harvesting from water supply pipelines

•A novel inline bidirectional vertical crossflow turbine is proposed.•Different schemes of water blocks are investigated and optimized based on CFD.•The developed turbine can efficiently produce the output power of 17.17–88.21 W.•The water head loss well remains under 7 m even at a water flow velocity of 3.0 m/s.•Great potential for the application in a water integrated network is harvested.
