Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Carvacrol using Carbon Paste Electrode

A simple and affordable carbon paste electrode was developed to detect carvacrol. The spicy and strong odour makes it a useful ingredient for different types of species. Despite its many health benefits, carvacrol induces pro-oxidant activity if used in high concentrations. The electrochemical behavior of CPE has been explored in PBS6 buffer solution and the sensor founds to be sensitive. It responded linearly from 10 to 100µM, with a detection limit of 0.03µM. Oregano essential oil samples were analyzed using principal component analysis, which shows a good separability with an index of 1.473. This electrochemical approach can thus be used for the simple and rapid detection of carvacrol traces.
