•The increase of the damage depth causes the local enhancement of the plasma.•The growth of the damage area precedes crack propagation during damage growth.•The crack propagation time is much larger than the pulse time.•The circumferential crack propagation time is larger than the radial crack.•The stress and shock waves promote the transformation of the crack.
