Abstract
Multicomponent nutritional formulas are rarely evaluated for their effectiveness and safety to protect metabolic health. We analyzed the effects of short-term supplementation with a multicomponent formula, AGELess DefenseTM, on blood pressure, clinical chemistry, and body composition in non-diabetic, non-hypertensive adults. Ten healthy mid-age adults (aged 47.5 ± 8.5 years; 7 women) volunteered to take part in this randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over pilot trial. The participants were allocated in a double-blind design to receive AGELess DefenseTM or placebo (inulin) during a 4-week intervention period. At the 4-week follow-up, AGELess DefenseTM reduced serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly more than the placebo (P = 0.05). Serum insulin levels increased significantly after consuming AGELess DefenseTM (P = 0.03), with AGELess DefenseTM having a medium-to-large effect size (d = 0.71). These preliminary findings suggest that AGELess DefenseTM is an effective nutritional intervention for protecting metabolic health; additional studies are warranted to corroborate this effect in metabolically compromised individuals.
