Association of Women Surgeons 2022 Presidential Address: Our fortieth year (plus one)—a ruby anniversary

This article is a textual record of the Presidential Address from the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) Annual Conference in 2022. This marks our return to a conference where we can gather to renew friendships, network, and plan; it provides us the opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our organization. In reviewing the history of AWS, we celebrate our accomplishments, highlight the awards and programs, and plan for the future. To support those early in their training or careers, mentorship, coaching, and leadership skills are highlighted. COVID-19 pandemic underlined the necessity for greater inclusion, equity and diversity within the field of surgery; clearly this is needed both at home and globally. Together with our colleagues in collaborating organizations, we must go forward as active allies to affect the changes long overdue.
