Novel energy identification method for shallow cracked rotor system

•The shallow crack which has unobvious fault signals in the time or frequency domain can be identified accurately through the vibration energy method.•Crack faults can bring a special phenomenon in the 3D energy model and its projection plane.•The influences of parameters on the cracked rotor system are thoroughly studied.•The identification method of the cracked rotor has higher accuracy in tests.
