•Leptin resistance develops in rats with free access to sucrose solution.•The resistance is prevented if other nutrients are present in the solution.•Rats with free access to sucrose solution eat frequent small meals throughout the day.•Limiting access to only 12 h/day does not prevent development of resistance.
