•Decrease in the particle size leads to the diffusion mechanism change as VD-GBD-SD.•Change in diffusion mechanism is due to the increase in contacts between particles.•Increase in the fraction of surface ions leads to the activation of the SD mechanism.•SD leads to the frame structure formation and slowdown the convergence of particles.
