Abstract
This study seeks to evaluate the accuracy of the output from a wheelchair-occupant simulation model in comparison with real-world experimental results from industry literature. Different model setups, in which the wheelchair’s occupant is supported on three types of seat cushions, are formulated with the model subjected to low-frequency vibration waves arising from the interaction between wheelchair tires and ground profile. The model’s output, in terms of displacement response of the wheelchair and its occupant’s body parts, are analyzed and validated against the results of well-defined published papers. The analysis reveals that the occupant’s torso receives the largest impact from vibration causing the organ to exhibit maximum displacement; and the foam-based cushion performs the best in helping to dampen the amplitude of displacement responses.
