•Ligula intestinalis s.L. is a tapeworm with global distribution and wide host spectrum.•Species delimitation identified at least 10 lineages, some of them living in sympatry.•Dated phylogeny showed recent origin the lineages (5 mya or younger).•Vicariant and host-switching events formed the evolution of host specific lineages.
