Durable superhydrophobic sponge for all-weather cleanup of viscous crude oil by electrothermal and photothermal effects

•A superhydrophobic/superoleophilic sponge is prepared by an in-situ polymerization and dipping coating method.•The superhydrophobic sponge possesses excellent mechanical properties and chemical durability.•The surface temperature of the superhydrophobic sponge can be raise to 127.8 °C within 3 min through photothermal and Joule heating properties.•The superhydrophobic sponge can achieve continuous high-efficiency recovery of the highly viscous crude oil.
