Performance analysis of OSPF in integrated satellite and terrestrial network

In the past few years, considerable attention has been paid to integrated satellite and terrestrial networks. Among all the related research, routing algorithms have attracted extensive interest. Although some encouraging progress has been made, these studies often lack a benchmark of comparison. Many articles compare their algorithms to OSPF, but these comparisons are usually limited to few metrics and a simple scenario or use some unreasonable metrics to make their algorithm look better. We hope to give a more comprehensive performance analysis of the OSPF protocol so that researchers can have a benchmark for comparison when developing other routing protocols. This paper analyzes the performance of OSPF in LEO networks from these aspects: available time of the whole network, delay jitter, end-to-end delay, packet loss rate, and route update overhead. The simulation result shows that the available time of the whole network may not be a reasonable evaluation metric, and with the expansion of the scale of the LEO network, the average packet loss rate and the route update overhead increase violently, which provides evidence that OSPF does not apply to LEO networks.
