•In young Greeks 1/3 and 1/7 report depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively.•Mental history, attention/learning problems and substances predict depression/anxiety.•Sociοeconomic factors are not significant for depression/anxiety in Greek youth.•Screening of above clinical findings should be central in preventive strategies.•Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our findings.
