•The majority of evidences amongst cross-sectional and longitudinal studies show that DHEA and/or DHEA(S) are inversely associated to depression.•Patients treated with DHEA had an amelioration of depressive symptoms.•Mechanism of action may involve opposite effects to cortisol and direct modulation of neurotransmission.
