•A simplified phase change model with graded porous is proposed.•The simplified model can quickly and accurately predict thermal performance.•Structure parameters of graded porous are further optimized by genetic algorithm.•The optimized case can significantly shorten the solidification time by 8.25%.•The four-graded layer structure is preferred under different optimized parameters.
