•Ireland's forest cover of 11% is substantially lower than the European average.•Overall, farmers within this study have a positive attitude to trees on farms.•Family members, local farmers and advisors influence farmers’ decisions’ to plant.•The level of knowledge of agroforestry and tree planting grants in Ireland is low.•The re-designation of land to forestry is a major barrier to tree planting.
