The article discusses the system of obtaining and using hydrogen on autonomous locomotives and using it as additives to diesel fuel. The substantiation of the use of hydrogen on the basis of analysis and comparison of physical and chemical parameters of the main types of fuel of locomotives is given. The main methods of hydrogen production are given. The substantiation of the most promising method of obtaining hydrogen on autonomous locomotives - on the basis of an on-board generator - is carried out. The technical solution and scheme of the on- board hydrogen generator are given. The authors of the article are the most perspective method of supplying hydrogen to the diesel engine along with the charged air. To ensure reliable operation of the diesel locomotive when supplying hydrogen, a layout scheme with a developed hydrogen generator, a hydrogen preparation and supply system, as well as a system for measuring the parameters of a diesel locomotive with a hydrogen generator is given. Studies were conducted on a shunting diesel locomotive in order to assess the improvement of three environmental indicators when adding hydrogen to diesel fuel.
