FDTD-TL Method for the Prediction of the Transient Response of Shielded Cable Above the Ground

Abstract
In order to predict the transient responses of shielded cable above the perfectly conducting (PEC) ground illuminated by external electromagnetic pulses, a numerical method in time domain (TD) is presented in this paper. Based on the transmission line (TL) theory, the shielded cable is divided into the internal and external TL models coupled by the transfer impedance of the shield. The corresponding TL equations are derived and the one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (1-D FDTD) method is adopted to solve the equations. Using the presented method, the terminal responses on the inner cores of shielded cables above the PEC ground are calculated, which shows that the method is accurate and high-efficiency for the transient analysis of shielded cables.
