Commentary: A Roadmap for the Next Generation of Innovators

Healthcare innovation includes both the development of new technologies, and the repurposing of existing technologies. Historically, surgeons are responsible for many paradigm-shifting innovations. Intrinsic determination to improve outcomes and minds geared for practical problem solving make surgeons uniquely well-suited to create novel solutions to shortcomings in care, which may take the form of new medical products. In the context of the myriad responsibilities of the surgeon, the process of bringing a new product to market is daunting, particularly early in a career.
