Abstract
The nature of support and its interaction with supported noble metal play a crucial role in heterogeneous catalysis design. However, insights into how to tune metal support interactions to optimize the activity still need further exploit. Ir/CeO 2 shows much lower CO oxidation activity than Ir/TiO 2 due to the strong interaction between Ir and CeO 2 , which not only causes Ir to enter the CeO 2 lattice, but also produces positively charged Ir and blocks CO adsorption. Introducing the limited amount of CeO 2 on Ir/TiO 2 produces localized interaction between Ir and CeO 2 , which can tune the surface electronic state of Ir by controlling the interaction strength between Ir and support, and a “volcano curve” relationship between CO oxidation activity and electronic state is built. Limited amount of CeO 2 on Ir/TiO 2 leads to CO complete oxidization at 22 o C. The study demonstrates the utilization of tuning interaction strength between active metal and support is a potential method to increase the catalytic activity.
