Abstract
Updates in information and communication technologies (ICTs) give attention to the environmental impacts caused by the life cycle of electronic products, among them, local area network (LAN) cables. Each change in the development of the products, these items tend to have a reduced life time, and consequently, the disposal end to be several times early and without the due treatment and control. In order to know the relevance of impacts associated with LAN network cables, it is necessary to study their life cycle using the life cycle assessment (LCA). Before this empirical study, the main environmental impacts caused by this product should be identified in previously, and for that this article has been carried out a literature review of some of the materials used in the production of these cables, such as common polyethylene and biothylene-based of sugar cane. These compounds were related as a way of verifying the competitive advantages and sustainable benefits from the choice of use of biopolyethylene in the production of LAN network cables, as this material, in addition to generate political impacts with better environmental, it is also economically and strategically more feasible, if it is appropriately used in the production processes.
