•The association of reasoning styles and obsessive compulsive symptoms were examined.•Reasoning styles were examined via a modification of a classic categorization task.•A reduced preference for rule-based categorization was associated with symptoms.•Results associates a more intuitive, non-formal reasoning style with symptoms.•Diversion from formality comports with subjective criteria for behavior termination.
