•23 waste materials were screened for effective PFAS retention in landfill soil.•Fly ash-based waste was found to remove 98% of 11 PFAS from leachate.•Sorption relied on PFAS perfluorocarbon chain length indicating hydrophobic binding.•PFAS sorption to grate-fire incineration fly ash indicated an alternative mechanism.
